Plant Peas for Earth Day 2010

When peas are sitting on a child's dinner plate and they came from who knows where, they seemed to be the last food that is eaten or not eaten on their plate. I know this from experience with my child and also 11 years teaching small children.

About eight years ago I started planting a spring garden with my class. The children picked the peas whenever they grew large enough to eat, and they ate them. They ate peas whenever they went out on the playground!

Now I have a year round garden, and grow seasonal vegetables. We are on our second set of peas this school year (advantages of living in sunny California). The child love to open the pods and pop the peas in their mouth!

Last year I was lucky enough to have my daughter in my class. She would get a bucket and collect peas during recess. Mia would have a bucket full of peas that she would munch on. This is our first year we are planting them at home, her very own pea plants!

A pie night

Not a typical spring day, today was filled with cold winds and dark clouds. A day that begs to end snuggled in blankets with warm pie!

So that's what we did, we had pie for dinner and dessert.

Meat and Potato Pasties | Real Simple Recipes
I made a couple changes to this recipe by adding chopped zucchini and mushrooms. Instead of making homemade dough I just bought frozen pie crust sheets from Trader Joe's cause sometimes that's what working moms have to do.

With the left over sheet of pie crust we made mini apple pies. Mia loves using this apple corer, peeler, slicer!

Spring break and strawberry picking

One our favorite things to do during the spring is pick strawberries at Tanaka Farms. The farm is situated in a valley in the heart of Irvine and is all organic. The kids love the wagon ride and trying some of the fresh crops spring has to offer.
